Saturday Morning Update #52

Phew, the last Saturday Morning Update of 2017! Every single week for the last year I have had at least one unedited stream of conscious paragraph posted on the blog about what I've been up to in the past week. Usually these updates get no views. One of them is in my Top 10 posts ever, which is weird.

This week: What I got for Christmas. As you'll see in the photo above I got a Super Mario and Steven Universe t-shirt from my boss, two Digimon plushies from Jay at Morphin Legacy, and Slytherin pajama pants and Felicia Day's memoir from my lovely wife Katrina.

The Modern Gafa has been a thing, in some for or another, since 2008. But it wasn't until 2017, when I relaunched it as a personal blog, that it became my most rewarding and fulfilling project ever. Thanks for coming along on this journey with me!

It's so easy to be negative in 2017. It hasn't been the best year for anyone. However, when I look around at all the opportunities I've been given and all that I have accomplished, 2017 was probably one of the best years of my life. I can't wait to share 2018 with all of you.

Favorite Books & Comics of 2017

This was the year that I got back into reading in a big way. Last year I didn’t even have a comic shelf and it’d been ages since I picked up a book I wasn’t being forced to read at school. Usually, there would be a single month out of the year where I got really into the idea of being a novelist and would read five random books and then give up. But this year I read more novels than I did in four years of college combined and discovered new characters like Kamala Khan and Miles Morales who got me interested in regularly reading new comics. And so, having read dozens of books and hundreds of pages this year, here are my favorite books and comics of 2017.

Saturday Morning Update #51

I frickin love the holidays, did you guys know that? So many people my age are all about Halloween and horror movies and spooky times but when to me the Nightmare Before Christmas is a movie about a bunch of jerks who oppress the Almighty Santa Claus. We got our first ever Christmas Tree together at a closing dollar store this passed summer and have slowly been decorating it and sticking presents under it. I also love presents, because I get things. Things are awesome! Giving people things is awesome too. Having a week off from work is cool too. And once I go back to work I'm only there for one day and then have a super long weekend for New Years. Holidays are dope!

REVIEW: Crash Course #1 (Project Terra)

A whole universe of animated entertainment came into my life when Cartoon Network became a part of our basic cable package. Everyone remembers Dexter’s Lab and The Powerpuff Girls. But even I barely remember the obscure series called I Am Weasel. A spin-off of the slightly more memorable Cow and Chicken, there is only one episode of I Am Weasel that sticks in my memory: the titular weasel went to space and transformed the environment into a habitable new world in a process called terraforming. I thought this was a totally impossibly imaginary science fiction concept. Today, terraforming is the subject of a new middle-grade series that sees students from across the galaxy learning the art of this bizarre science at a super cool boarding school. Check out my review of Project Terra: Crash Course after the jump.

PROFESSIONAL GEEK: Nivetha Kannan

Professional Geeks is a series of interviews with some of the coolest people I know; people who pay their bills being geeks. Nivetha Kannan is a freelance artist and graphic designer. I first met her in Artist Alley at Tekko 2014 where she and her sister were selling high quality Digimon plushies (I still have my Tanemon almost four years later.) Nivetha has also worked on indie games and zines. Recently, she has been working at Cartoon Network.

REVIEW: Warcross + Giveaway

Ever since I started getting into the book side of geek blogging, I’ve known about Warcross by Marie Lu. I had just finished Ready Player One and Warcross sounded so similar, I was ready for another adventure into a virtual reality game world. After leaving New York Comic Con, where I discovered a bunch of new books, Warcross was still at the top of my list of books I wanted to read as soon as possible. Once I got my hands on a copy, I couldn’t put it down.

After the jump, check out my full review of Marie Lu’s Warcross and stick around to find out how to win your own copy!

Satuday Morning Update #48

Well NaNoWriMo is over and as you can see from my stats above I didn't even make it halfway to the 50k word goal. BUT! I did finish my story technically. There are at least 2 chapters I'd like to add and the entire second half is a rushed mess, but there is a satisfying ending and a full character arc. It's also a novelization of a script I wrote so now comes the fun part: I'm gonna make a movie!

REVIEW: Astra Lost in Space Vol. 1

manga review for astra lost in space viz media shonen jump anime

I was first drawn to this new manga series from Viz Media by of its cover. Two teenagers floating in space. At first glance, it looked like Valerian to me. But the description of nine kids going to camp and getting lost in space reminded me of my other love: Digimon. A new manga that’s basically Digimon in space minus the actual Digimon? Alright, sign me up. Check out my full review after the jump.

Saturday Morning Update #47

This was a busy week for us. Last Saturday we went to a Yule Ball event and then we traveled to my parent's house for Thanksgiving. I'm pretty behind on NaNoWriMo, way past the point of finishing on time. But finishing on time wasn't so much my goal anyway. Otherwise, I've spent my week watching Naruto movies and reading DC Comics. I have a literal stack of stuff to review for the blog, so my goal is going to be getting through that stuff!

Who Was Behind the Max Headroom Signal Intrusion on November 22, 1987?

On an Autumn night in 1987, a mysterious face invaded the living rooms of many Chicago residents. A man wearing a mask interrupted regularly scheduled programming for just a few moments before vanishing from the universe forever. The culprit, who has never been identified, wore a mask of 1980s cyberpunk icon Max Headroom. This bizarre mystery celebrates its 30th anniversary today, so it’s time to take another look at it.

Saturday Morning Update #46

Holy cow fans wen't crazy this week! First, details for DICE and EA's Star Wars Battlefront II came out and they were full of pay to win nonsense that lit the internet on fire. Calculations ahve estimated it could take over 6000 hours to unlock everything. Or you could just pay $2000. I am not a fan of online-centric games. If something is online-only it's an automatic 0/10 for me. And even then I'm not a huge fan of the way single player games go these days. However, retro and modern gamers alike have to agree that loot boxes and this pay to win crap is the worst thing ever. I'm not even sure when online gameplay became about leveling up and unlocking things. Last time I played an online game all players were on an even playing level. Actual skill was what mattered.

And then, just as the Battlefront II drama was settling (it picked up again like a day later) the Power Rangers side of Twitter got its first look at the Zeo Gold Ranger figure from the Legacy line of high quality collector's figures. The gold armor peices of the Ranger's amazingly iconic suit is neither high quality nor is it anything a collector would want. It looks like uncooked macaroni. This wouldn't be a problem if they hadn't shown off a shiny gold prototype before. Collectors have been told that in order for the next waves of figures to be released they have to buy the current ones. But obviously collectors are upset because they shouldn't have to buy more just to "unlock" new ones. Sound familiar? There's also the "just paint it" crowd. They're dumb. If you're paying $20 for a figure you shouldn't have to paint it so it looks good. I have two Power Rangers figures in my collection and they're both basic $9 ones. The Legacy figures are, to me, overpriced and feature bulky muscley versions of the show's slim characters. This is also not the first problem with the line. Previous figures have had inconsistent belt colors and lacked iconic weapons.

Yeah it's been a pretty crazy week with lots of fans angry about lots of things. In both of these cases I agree with the angry. Vote with your wallets (which in this case involves not opening your wallet at all) and let the people know what you want!

REVIEW: Marvel x ThinkGeek Gear Up Collection

I love ThinkGeek. I really do. If I could fill me entire wardrobe with stuff from ThinkGeek, you bet I would. This time around they sent me some pieces from their Gear Up collection, a partnership with Marvel to create an entire line based around the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Check it out after the jump.

Saturday Morning Update #45

This week I finished reading the Death Note manga. I started this ages ago, after getting the whole thing for $8 at a flea market, but kept taking mini breaks due to reading other stuff. I've seen the anime a bunch of and have watch every live action adaptation, but this was my first step into the original black & white version. I gotta say a lot of it was waaaaay better than any other version I've seen, but there were still some moments that the film school graduate in me thought were better in the adaptations. It does have a lot more detail so confusing stuff from the anime is explained way better, but that unfortunately means a loooot of pages where one character is just talking which results in almost nothing but text boxes. But it's still one of my favorite anime/manga series of all time. As of now all I need to see is the 2016 movie for completion sake.

What did you do this week? Is there a series that you just gotta read and watch everything from?

REVIEW: The Magic Misfits

This was one of the first freebie books I picked up at New York Comic Con. It came in a box with a small art print. There was so much going on that day that I didn’t think much of it. Until I got back to my room and noticed the name of the author: Neil Patrick Harris. He is an awesome and hilarious actor and part of me knew, hidden in the back of my mind, that he was a great magician too. Not to mention he is known to be an awesome father. In short, Neil Patrick Harris is the perfect person to write a middle-grade novel like this.

Saturday Morning Update #44

NaNoWriMo is here! Every year I've attempted National novel writing month, but things always come up (November is seriously the worst time to do it.) October this year was especially difficult for me in my personal life, so when I realized NaNo was coming I gave up before it even started. Then I wrote a movie. In one day I had a first draft of a feature length film and was full of motivation to bring it to life. I'm not going to jump to shoot it right away, so I thought a fun exercse would be to do a novelization. It could also be an extra way to make money (package it with a DVD collector's edition, for example.) and having what is basically a complete outline has been pretty helpful. I'm just converting the screenplay into prose and adding some more detail and flair here and there. And it's working. I actually feel confident that I'll do it this time. I'm going to write a book. And then I'm gonna write a movie.

REVIEW: Stitch Head

In the vein of Tim Burton and other Frankenstein-esque gothic fantasy, Stitch Head is a wonderful story about a mad scientist’s forgotten first creation: a tiny patched up ragdoll that wants to be both left alone and unforgettable. With a story by Gus Bass and illustrations by Pete Williamson, Stitch Head is a (hilariously creepy) fun read.

Saturday Morning Update #43

I don't talk about this much, but I work at Victory Pointe! Just one shift a weekend right now but it's been the best job ever so far. VP is an arcade and gaming cafe (read more about it here) but so far my part of the job is less about gaming and more about customer service at the bar. No alcohol, just ice cream. Milkshakes, floats, sundaes, splits, and so much more. I honestly enjoy making milkshakes and decorating them and being surrounded by games and talking about games with the staff and customers. The moment Katrina gets a full time job I am quitting mine so I can work VP more because my god is it the best.

Comic Book Road Trip Vol. 1

Earlier this month I traveled to New York City to attend New York Comic Con. To save money I skipped the flight and traveled by bus, spending a total of sixteen hours on the road. I didn’t want to pack books for the road since I correctly predicted I’d buy and pick up so many things at the con that I would end up throwing my clothes away to be able to pack everything. Instead, I opted to use my local library’s free app and downloaded seventeen free digital comic books to keep me entertained. One of them was crap. The other sixteen are the subject of this first (and maybe last?) Comic Book Road Trip.

Saturday Morning Update #42

Operation Read One Book a Week is off to a great start as I continue strong with Marie Lu's Warcross. I've heard a lot about this from other bloggers, especially Alexa Loves Books. It follows a hacker and bounty hunter named Emika Chen (yay for badass female Asian representation!) as she enters the world championships of the most popular virtual reality game of all time to search for a rogue hacker who has malicious intent for the games creator. I was soooo looking forward to this one, which means my expectations were naturally way too high. I honestly found all the real world stuff way more interesting than the virtual reality stuff. The Warcross game itself is kinda lame, and the real world stuff is a lot more intriguing as we see Emika bonding with her team and the game's creator. Luckily the Warcross segments are few and far between. We follow Emika in the real world more often and that part is awesome.

What have you been reading? What did you do this week? Halloween is coming, are you ready?

REVIEW: Seventh Decimate

Seventh Decimate by Stephen R. Donaldson was one of the advance reading copies I picked up at New York Comic Con this year. At first glance at the back of the box I got one vibe from it: Avatar: The Last Airbender meets Game of Thrones. Did the fantasy novel live up to those expectations? Find out in my full review.

Saturday Morning Update #41

This week I read a book. I picked up a big fat 300 page tome on Tuesday morning and Friday night I finished it. Very few books have been hard to put down, like Harry Potter or Ready Player one, but this wasn't that. I really just wanted to try and see if I could do it. I'm trying to get more into books and I have a huge stack of unread books, especially from New York Comic Con, so I wanted to see if I could read a big fat book in a week. I can. At 300 pages with a lot of places where paragraphs seemed unnecessarily broken, The Seventh Decimate by Stephan R. Donaldson is more of a medium sized novel. Some bigger stuff might take me longer and some middle grade stuff should be easier, but I can do it if I try. Full review of The Seventh Decimate coming soon!

New York Comic Con 2017

This past weekend I headed up to New York City for my first ever New York Comic Con! It was so exciting and there was so much going on I knew right away I wasn't going to be able to see everything at all. Check out the whole thing with a vlog after the jump!

Saturday Morning Update #40

New York Comic Con is half over and the past few days have been a blur of awesomeness. I have gotten to talk to some cool people and pick up some free stuff along the way. There will be a full breakdown in the coming days, but the highlight so far was meeting Peter Sudarso! Peter plays Preston the Blue Ranger on Power Rangers Ninja Steel and is brother to Dino Charge's Yoshi Sudarso. The two are super cool anime weeaboo dorks and they both watch Super Sentai and spent their time in New Zealand posting pics from the set. Peter is without a doubt one of my favorite actors to work on the show and getting to meet him, even just briefly, was magical.

Saturday Morning Update #39

This is my 100th post on the blog! Of course this is like my eighth blog so it's by far from "my" 100th post, but it's still a big deal. I've been blogging in one form or another for about ten years, but this blog has been the most successful and rewarding. Header image is the new ice cream parlor dealio that just opened up at Victory Pointe. I've mentioned Victory Pointe a few times, but if you have no idea what the heck that is you can check this week's article here and find out what it's all about!

Next week I'll be in New York for freakin Comic Con! What did you do this week and what are you up to next week?

Saturday Morning Update #38

This week I went to a "Yell Like Goku" event. It started like many fake Facebook events as a joke that evolved to having hundreds of confirmed attendees. With time to kill I got there a bit early and started to watch the usual crowd (i.e. people you see at an anime con) as people began asking a common question: is this really going to happen?

REVIEW: ThinkGeek Messenger Bag of Holding

I’ve gotten a lot of use, and compliments, out of my ThinkGeek inspired backpack from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. However, I’ve always been the kind of guy to carry just a few essentials in an easily accessible bag. Luckily, ThinkGeek sent me another bag to review that is way more my style: the Messenger Bag of Holding.

Saturday Morning Update #37

At the beginning of September set out to blog every day in the month. As of yesterday, that's not happening. I had the idea back in August but decided to wait until September because it was shorter and I'd have five Saturday Morning Updates for easy posts. September also leads in to New York Comic Con, which means money has been tight. Not to mention some private stuff going on at my day job.I've had less money to buy things to review and less motivated to go out and do fun things, so I've had less things to blog about. The stuff I prepped back in August have been big hits, and the stuff I threw together at night when nothing had gone up yet proved to be a prime example of quantity over quality. I spent what little free time I had writing about stuff I didn't really care about. I might honestly go back and delete some of this month's posts all together. I would rather crack out one or two high quality posts than try to rush something every single day. This was supposed to be a fun experiment, but halfway through the test tubes exploded and nature bit back in a big way.

Let me know in the comments how your week went. I hope it was better than mine.

Top 10 Favorite Video Games of All Time

Today I thought I’d share with all of you my favorite video games of all time. As a child of the 90s, I grew up when GameBoy ruled the earth, and I came of age with a DualShock 2 in my hands. So here are my top ten favorite video games of all time.

Do Digimon Have Gender?

I’ve seen this question come up a lot over the past few years. It’s so strange that it’s even worth debating, especially when there are so many other aspects of Digimon that could actually fuel an interesting conversation. Everyone wants to know if Digimon have gender, which I guess is a fair question. Since I’ve stumbled across people asking online, and multiple people have actually come to me for answers, I thought I’d finally break it down and see if we can’t clear this one up. Do Digimon have gender?

How I Introduced Digimon to the Next Generation

It’s everyone’s dream to be able to share their love of something with someone else. I’m sure everyone has sat down to watch their favorite movie with a friend and spent the whole time watching their friend’s face for reactions. Digimon has always been the hardest thing to share with people. The anime isn’t perfect and the video games are almost all terrible. You really have to be a specific kind of person to enjoy Digimon. Recently, I was successful in introducing the Japanese multimedia franchise to the most challenging of audiences: kids.

[NYCC] Panels I want to Attend

At long last, the schedule of panels has been released for New York Comic Con. Of the hundreds occurring over the four-day weekend convention, we have big stars, new shows, industry spotlights, and even a bunch on social justice topics. I’ve gone through every single panel and picked out all of the ones I am interested in attending.

Pittsburgh Summer 2017 Wrap-Up

Back in June, I gave you guys a preview of all the cool things that were going on in Pittsburgh this summer. The Steel City is always full of geeky places to go and things to do and this summer there were sometimes two or three events going on in the same weekend. With kids going back to school and big weekend events ramping down, I thought it was about time to take a look at the summer behind me and talk about what I did and did not do.

Saturday Morning Update #35

My New York Comic Con badge arrived! And man is it not the best con badge I've ever seen. The front is, unfortunately, just an ad for the new season of The Walking Dead. Badges only just shipped out so not everyone has one, but I did some Googling and it looks like the other badges just have feature different characters from the zombie show. The back is awesome though. I collect all my con badges and most of them are just blank on the back with maybe a barcode or somewhere to write your name. The back of the NYCC badges have the show floor and panel room hours, social media and hashtag info, and tons of other fine print. And I guess it works like a bus pass and can be tapped to be scanned into certain things. Tat's awesome! It's pretty much a month away and I can't wait!

REVIEW: ThinkGeek Breath of the Wild T-Shirt & Backpack

If you check out my blog, follow me on social media, or have ever just been inside my apartment, you’ll know what a huge fan I am of video games, anime, comics, and more. If you’re a random person I pass on the street, your only glimpse at my geekiness is my occasional t-shirt of awesomeness. It’s only natural that I eventually got connected with ThinkGeek, the number one purveyor of geek lifestyle accessories. In my first product review for ThinkGeek, the geek culture emporium sent me to the ruined kingdom of Hyrule in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Saturday Morning Update #34

This week I went to Victory Pointe and got to test out a new game called Dream Home. It's a cute little tabletop game with adorable storybook style artwork where you try to build the ultimate home by picking the right rooms and add on features. Katrina and I played with the two managers at the arcade, while I had a root beer float, and we all had a blast.

Yesterday I got my first package from a new partnership that I am dying to share with you guys! And I booked my AirBnB for New York! Comic Con here I come! Yesterday I watched the Death Note movie and while I thought the first half was really strong the second half fell apart to the point where I'm not even sure what it was about.

What did you do this week? Let me know in the comments below.

LET'S PLAY: Shogun Bloodlines

Here's my first gaming video! This is a game developed in RPG Maker VX Ace. I met the developer at Replay FX 2016 and he gave me a free copy after I impressed him with my RPG Maker knowledge. Apparently I was the first and only person the entire convention to even notice that it was made in RPG Maker. So... that was over a year ago, guess it's time for my review!

How I Organize My Video Game Collection

I occasionally get asked how I go about organizing my video game collection. This happens when it pops up on my Instagram or even when someone comes over. You would assume it was simply alphabetized, but when it comes to organization I’m far from simple. Read on to find out how I organize my video game collection.

Saturday Morning Update #33

This week I watched Marvel's The Defenders on Netflix, played Agents of Mayhem and found it too glitchy to play, and read a really good book. Star Wars: Jedi Academy is a hilarious book written by Darth Vader and Sun author/illustrator Jeffrey Brown and published by Scholastic. It follows a Tattooine farmboy named Roan in his first year at the Jedi Academy, which is depicted here as a typical American middle school. There's bullies, questionable cafeteria food, school dances, physical education, and even multiple choice tests on how to use the force. It reminds me a lot of Captain Underpants or Diary of a Wimpy Kid. But it's about Star Wars so it's better by default. There are so many fun references to the Star Wars universe that I'm not sure I caught them all. I highly recommend this book for Star Wars fans of any age. Order the book for yourself here. While you're add it check out the rest of the trilogy by Jeffrey Brown and a new series by Jarrett J. Krosoczka.

Have a great week everyone!

REVIEW: Digimon Adventure Tri: Determination

It’s been 3 years since we first found out about Digimon Adventure tri., the sequel series to the original Digimon anime that changed my life eighteen years ago. Thanks to Crunchyroll we’ve been able to see each new chapter of this saga the same day they’re theatrically released in Japan. Last year we got a chance to see the first chapter, dubbed in English, in a special one-night event. And now, thanks to Shout! Factory, we can finally watch Chapter 2 Determination dubbed in English.

REVIEW: Ms. Marvel Vol. 7

Ms. Marvel is currently the only ongoing series we pay a lot of attention too, the only one we regularly buy trades for. Over the past year, we’ve fallen in love with Kamala Kahn and her rise to walk in Carol Danvers’s footsteps and protect Jersey City while also building her own identity as an Inhuman and an Avenger. She’s gradually become our favorite superhero with writing and art that only gets better and better.

Saturday Morning Update #32

Not really sure what to talk about this week. I don't really feel like doing a bunch of mini reviews of all the random comics I read this week. Guess a life update? I got my bus tickets to New York so now I just gotta book an AirBnB in Hell's Kitchen and I'm all set for New York Comic Con!  And I worked out a deal with a couple new partners to share some cool new stuff on here. Don't worry, this blog won't become a giant billboard. I'll only ever promote stuff I actually believe in and will always be a personal blog about me and my geeky life. Getting free products and such just ensures I always have something to talk about! And based on what I've heard about, I can't wait to show it to you guys!

REVIEW: Sailor Moon R: The Movie

Oh man, Sailor Moon. What a weird franchise. There’s been manga, anime, a tokusatsu series, more anime, and now the Sailor Guardians are back in their first ever feature length film. I caught a bunch of Sailor Moon throughout my childhood but it was always a random chance thing there and there. I got back into the series with Crystal but found myself having more fun watching the cheesy 90s dub. Sailor Moon R: The Movie is a mix of both worlds that come together for old school anime awesomeness.

Saturday Morning Update #31

After the last update went up I packed up for ReplayFX and, inspired by the video game culture surrounding me, I threw my copy of Ernest Cline's Ready Player One in my bag. I ordered it months ago when it was on sale and never got around to it, partially due to my recent comic book obsession. HOLY CRAP! Literally all I did this past week was read this book.

ReplayFX 2017

ReplayFX is a weekend long arcade and video game festival held in Pittsburgh the past few years. Featuring the largest public collection of working pinball, arcade, tabletop, and console games all free to play with the price of admission, ReplayFX is a lot of fun. The weekend also has panels, music performances, and an artist and vendor area. There’s even inflatable obstacle courses, face painting, and over $100,000 in tournament prize money. Needless to say, I look forward to ReplayFX every summer.

Saturday Morning Update #30

This weekend is ReplayFX so it's hard to try and talk about anything else. I've attended both Thursday and Friday and will be heading out for Saturday after hitting publish on this. It's It's four full days of arcade, pinball, console, tabeltop, music, and seminars. It's overwhelming how many games there are and I think I've only seriously played a few so far. Too busy catching up with friends and talking to vendors (and buying stuff)! Today's schedule for me is probably going to be mostly panels, cus I could use a break from so much walking and standing. But I'll try to get some games in.
