This Week In Comics: 7/4

Another New Comic Book Day is upon us! This week we’ve got the continuing adventures of one of my favorite series as well as the end of one and the beginning of another! Hit the jump to check out some of the new comics hitting the shelves at your local comic book shop this week.

Disclaimer: I received advance copies of all comics featured this week courtesy of their individual publishers.
Opinions are my own.

Go Go Power Rangers #11 (BOOM! Studios)
There are two ongoing Power Rangers series right now and as Shattered Grid continues they’re both playing tug of war with my heart - and this month Go Go pulled a little bit harder. With the announcement that the Ranger Slayer will lead the new team in the other book after Shattered Grid, it’s no secret that she’ll be a good guy at some point.

This issue shows us a glimpse at her goodness. Beneath the evil, ruthless warrior who serves Lord Drakkon is the same old Kim. But this Kim comes from Drakkon’s wartorn alternate future. She’s seen too many of her friends die and will do everything to protect them.

Considering Go Go takes place “in the past” it was a smart choice for its connection to Shattered Grid to be through flashbacks. Each issue has explored the Ranger Slayer’s origins as a resistance fighter against Drakkon’s army. I’m really looking forward to seeing her evolution as a character and her transition to the new team leader. Ryan Parott’s Go Go Power Rangers contains some of the best-written character moments in the history of the franchise.

I Hate Fairyland #20 (Image Comics)
It’s been a wild ride, but it’s time for us to say goodbye to Gertrude, Larry, and Fairyland. While there has been talk of an apocalyptic end to the fantasy world, the end of the comic series does come as a bit of a shock.

The final battle with Dark Cloudia wraps up and Gertrude, after nearly forty years trapped in Fairyland without aging, gets the ending she truly deserves - one that is sadly never after. At least she finally seems to have learned something and gets a brief moment of catharsis before it’s all over.

Volume 4 of I Hate Fairyland, which collects this final storyline, drops in August. You can pre-order it here

New Lieutenants of Metal #1 (Image Comics)
Well, I guess I’m not going to be lacking a fun and goofy comic for a while. With I Hate Fairyland over it’s time for this new series by Joe Casey (one of the creators of Ben 10) that has a very strong first issue and promises lots of weirdness for the future.

In a world that looks like a cross between old video games and old Saturday morning cartoons, the New Lieutenants of Metal is a super taskforce that fights evil. That’s it, it’s all the setup we need. The team is made up of five members who may as well be living action figures with their varied appearances and cooky gadgets and powers. Their base of operations is a flying airship too.

It really feels like the creators are just playing with a box of toys. There is a childlike wonder in every page. That being said, this is rated T for Teen. There’s no blood or guts but it does resemble an Adult Swim animated series a bit. I say this a lot but it really does feel like a comic made specifically for me. It’s got personality exploding on every page and you’ll want to get caught up in the blast.
