Geeky First Anniversary Gifts

Today marks 1 year since Katrina and I got married! Someone, somewhere, at some point, decided that the gifts exchanged on the first anniversary of a wedding should be made of paper. Not sure why, but okay. While researching some possible paper gifts for my beloved I realized that the term “paper” is pretty flexible and can include pretty much anything. Paper is like corn, it’s in everything. So if your first anniversary is coming up, read on for some ideas for geeky gifts made out of paper.

Tickets
Technically you’re giving the gift of some kind of experience, but tickets are made of paper. Hit up your local community websites and find out what shows are coming to town. Go see a play or a band. Pre-order tickets to a midnight movie premiere. Book a trip or even a cruise if you can swing it. If the actual paper ends up being just an e-mail confirmation printed out, consider spending some extra dough to design and print a commemorative “ticket” keepsake. There’s nothing worse than saving one of those movie tickets that are printed out on receipt paper and finding it yellowed and faded a year later.

Adult Coloring Books
I thought this was going to be a short fad, but new ones are still being released this year. Pretty much every company has released an adult coloring book for pretty much every major franchise out there. You just gotta find the right one for you and your special someone.

Notebooks and Journals
Katrina is a big fan of journals and carries at least two with her everywhere. One day I found a huge sale and bought a dozen and pre-wrapped all of them and saved them for a year’s worth of gifts. Moleskine makes wonderful notebooks in their signature leather-bound style with awesome prints from popular brands like Star Wars, Marvel, and Harry Potter. Speaking of Harry Potter, I’ve seen tons of great notebooks that look like they’re sold at the student store at Hogwarts and they are to die for. Or, if you have a weird sense of humor like me, you could always go with a Death Note.

Maps
Maybe take a map of the city where you fell in love and place a pin at every point in your romantic journey - the place where you met, had your first date, got married. What about a map of all the places you want to visit together? What about a map of Westeros? That one, obviously. Get that one. Or you can get a map from any of the fictional words that you both love. I just picked that example because Game of Thrones is cool.

Books
It does not matter if it’s a classic or a new release, YA or romance, comic or manga, literally almost every book ever is made out of paper. Since this is a big day, don’t just go for a random book. Barnes & Noble is famous for their leather-bound editions of classic literature. Some publishers release special covers for books upon re-release. You could also hit up a local comic shop and find a special, rare issue from your loved one’s favorite series.

Posters and Art Prints
You can get all kinds of movie posters in any size. If there isn’t a convention in town you can find an artist online and order a print from them. Find a piece of artwork your spouse will cherish or a poster from a movie you know they love.

Those are just a few ideas for first anniversary gifts. Did I miss anything? Let me know in the comments below!
