This Week In Comics: 5/9

Another New Comic Book Day is upon us! Hit the jump to check out some of the new comics hitting the shelves at your local comic book shop this week.

Disclaimer: I received advance copies of all comics featured this week courtesy of their individual publishers.
Opinions are my own.
Port of Earth #5 (Image Comics)
The Earth Security Agency, ESA, was created to maintain peace between humanity and alien visitors who stray too far from the Port of Earth. Agent George Rice has just lost his girlfriend to a rogue alien and there is no time to mourn. On his way to turn in his badge and speak to the psych department, the ESA headquarters is attacked and put on lockdown. Agent Rice is more concerned with turning in his badge - which was stolen and used to check out a weapon - than he is with his girlfriend who just died. I think this is a great way to depict shock and PTSD. And it’s great to see the plot moving forward as a mystery unfolds with an attack happening right in the middle of an important meeting. Who is behind it? Humans? Aliens? Port of Earth is turning into one of the best science fiction stories of the year. Get caught up with Volume 1 on Amazon.

Nuclear Winter Volume One (BOOM! Studios)
Nine years after an accident at a nuclear power plant causes a seemingly endless winter in Montreal, Flavie is just trying to get through her 20s. Doing deliveries on a snowmobile just to get by, Flavie loves being alone and doesn’t mind cruising through the snow by herself. But with a big snow storm on the way, everyone is on edge. That’s a big problem for Flavie, a mutant who looks totally normal but goes into a super-strong rage whenever she gets stressed out or angry. This mechanic does a great job at being a literal metaphor for social anxiety. Flavie can’t go to parties or bars because she’ll turn into an actual monster. Don’t we all feel like punching people whenever we go out? This radioactive slice of life story proves that humanity can survive anything, but surviving social interactions is harder. Nuclear Winter is in comic stores this week and everywhere else next week.  Get your copy now from Amazon.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Fullmetal Edition, Vol. 1 (Viz Media)

The Fullmetal Edition brings the story of the Elric brothers to new life on glossy white paper bound in a beautifully designed hardback cover.
