My Adventure Plans for 2019

It’s officially spring… Well… It’s officially what calendars consider to be spring, which means it’s time to start packing up to head out into the wild world of geeky adventures. That means it’s time to start planning out what conventions and other events I am planning on heading to for the rest of the year.

Philadelphia
Hey! I’m actually writing this from our hotel room. Katrina is currently attending the Granger Leadership Academy and because sleeping alone sucks I tagged along to the historical city to see what’s up. Just like our trip to Boston back in 2017, Katrina is doing her own thing while I check out the local comic shops, book stores, and maybe the Real World house.

Tekko 2019
Pittsburgh’s one and only anime convention is going mecha this year. I’ll probably keep going to Tekko until I move out of Pittsburgh or until Tekko stops happening. This year I plan on focusing on attending and presenting panels. I won’t be presenting any panels this year, instead just trying to relax and enjoy the con as much as possible.

3 Rivers Comicon
I love everything about this convention that puts the comic back in comic con. Except the location. It used to be the only life in a dead mall out in the middle of nowhere. But now 3 Rivers is moving to the Waterfront, a massive shopping district near all kinds of other cool places. Including places to eat! Since it’s closer I’ll probably spend more time there on both days.

Kaiju Big Battel
When this giant monster wrestling show came to town in 2017, I was blown away I had never seen anything like it. When they returned in 2018… I was kinda underwhelmed. There was a lot less “real” violence and a lot of magic and energy blasts left up to our imagination - not something that works well on stage - and it went on a bit longer than the first show I saw so I was pretty tired by the end. But it’s still a lot of fun!

Replay FX
The world’s largest retrogaming festival is coming back! The highlight of last year’s Replay was the large indie game section featuring creations from local developers. I hope that area is expanded on this year!

The Lion King on Broadway
The greatest musical theater show of all time I am told is coming back to Pittsburgh in September. I’ll finally be able to see the show that is based on one of my favorite movies of all time.

New York Comic Con
This is a pipe-dream for me. NYCC 2017 was one of the best weekends of my life. NYCC 2018 was unfortunate enough to not be graced with my presence. This year we hope to change that.

Back to Boston
It seems like we always travel to entertainment meccas for my things and historical landmarks for Katrina’s. We’re heading back to Boston for Leaky Con, a Harry Potter convention, but I’ll once again be taking to the streets on my own. We’ll be in a different area than last time so I hope to check out some new places.

Sangawa Project 2019
This is an 18+ convention from the people who brought you Tekko. It moved downtown last year so attending is a no brainer for me. It’s small, intimate, and there is free popcorn in the lobby. The new venue is smaller than usual so I’m curious to see how they plan to grow from there.
