January Favorites

I used to do monthly favorites videos, but I’m changing things up and doing written ones this year. Every month I’ll go over my favorite things I did, read, saw, played, watched, and more. January was a grim and depressing month. I spent most of it sick and it was too cold to go anywhere. Naturally, most of my favorites from the month were things I could do wrapped up in a blanket on my couch.

Fortnite: Battle Royale

My brother introduced me to this really simple yet really fun game. 100 players are all dropped on an island with nothing but a pickaxe and a simple goal: be the last one standing. Collect weapons, gather resources, build forts, and avoid the storm shrinking around the island. I thought this would hold me over before the new Digimon game came out, but I’m still playing it a month later. I haven’t won a match yet, but I’ve gotten really close so it’s only a matter of time before my first Victory Royale!

Trollhunters and Voltron: Legendary Defenders

There’s just something about Netflix/Dreamworks animated series. Both of these shows were things that caught my interest, but it took me a while to really get into them. I took a month to finish the first season of Voltron and wasn’t even excited when the second season came out. I took a full year break between the first season of Trollhunters. And these are shows designed to be binged. I love everything about both of these shows, so I just needed to form myself to catch up. Well, I spent most of the month watching Trollhunters and then Voltron and now all I want to do is watch more! Luckily the final season of Trollhunters is coming this year and more Voltron drops in March.

Felicia Day

Katrina got me a copy of Felicia Day’s book for Christmas and I just devoured it. Let me tell you, the queen of the geeks had a crazy weird childhood. The book follows her homeschooling, obsession with gaming, getting a pointless 4.0 in college, acting in Hollywood, and becoming the queen of the geeks. A big chunk of it also details the making of The Guild. After reading the book, Katrina joined me in a rewatch of the revolutionary web series. It was wonderful. I’d forgotten how much it inspired me to create my web series in college, a series that eventually evolved into this blog. Without Felicia Day, I’m not sure where I’d be on the internet today.

The Good Place

The NBC show about people navigating the afterlife and exploring moral ethics may have only aired 4 episodes in January, but not only was it one of my favorite things about the month - it may be my favorite thing ever. I don’t want to spoil anything, and it is hard to even describe the premise without spoiling anything, but the last half of Season 2 was so drastically different and weird that it’s not even the same show it was in the pilot. These last few episodes (including the season finale that technically aired in February) have completely changed the show and, if the third season goes the way I expect, it may be one of my favorite things of all time.

What did you love about January? Let me know in the comments below.
